NMS Vijayalakshmi Sanjeevimalayan Kalviyagam.promotes ECCA so as to help the students to develop their extra-curricular skills.
MUSIC
Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the bloodstream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even while present seated. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being.
Learning to play the keyboard is hard work and takes dedication. Not only does each song mastered increase a child’s self-esteem, but showcasing their newly learned talents at recitals can boost their self-esteem as much as winning a game in a sports competition.
Playing Tabla increases body awareness & kinesthetic development; it helps students develop graceful coordination and self-control. Playing rhythms improves listening skills and increases children’s ability to focus for extended periods of time.

INDOOR
Chess is often known as a game for the intellectually gifted and the best sport to exercise the most important organ in our body: the brain. Playing chess results in better brain function, improved memory and cognitive abilities, strategic thinking, and attention improvement.
Cuboro is a didactic toy of Swiss origin, designed with wooden marble tracking system made of cubed elements. It induces creative thinking. Cuboro elements function on the surface as well as in the tunnel system. Countless combinations are possible – Starting from simple two-dimensional ones up to highly complex three-dimensional ones.
Kapla is a wooden block construction toy designed for children and adults. Each block is an identically sized and shaped piece of pine, with dimensions in the ratio of 1:3:15; i.e., 1 unit high, 3 units wide and 15 units long. No need for glue and not a single nail, screw, or snap is involved in this activity. Kapla planks are not interlocking. Each Kapla plank is simply placed one on top of the other and thus held in place by gravity and balance alone. This activity enhances confidence, curiosity, and determination.

It develops agility of hands and feet, with sudden changes of pace and direction required. It also boosts the body’s flexibility and improves mental focus and self-confidence too.
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and one of the most widely viewed. It is a team sport that involves two teams of five active players each trying to score points against one another by throwing a ball througha 300cm (10feet) highhoop (the‘basket’) underorganisedrules. Basketball is a fast moving game that involves a lot of variety, including shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defence and much more. Hence it aids to burn calories (an hour of basketball can burn 630–750 calories), build endurance, improve balance and coordination, develop concentration and self-discipline and buildup muscle.

Roller skating strengthens the heart and bones. It relieves stress, develop balance, agility and coordination skills. It teaches to manage failure and how it feels to be successful.
High jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. It stimulates the metabolism, increases the oxygen capacity and improves our sense of balance.
FITNESS
Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines with the goal of improving all elements of fitness (flexibility, muscular strength, and cardio-vascular fitness). It is performed to music and practiced in a group setting led by an instructor.
- Learning aerobics helps in building a strong immune system among children. The body gains the ability to fight disease. Practising aerobics improves the ability of kids to perform other sports and tasks. Being actively involved in aerobics helps children get less prone to cold and allergies.
Gymnastics is one of the most comprehensive lifestyle exercise programs available to children, incorporating strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power, and discipline. Skills learned in gymnastics can benefit a child’s overall development. Gymnastics helps children build a range of motor and coordination skills, and assists in developing a good sense of body awareness.
Karate is a Japanese martial art whose physical aspects seek the development of defensive and counterattacking body movements. The themes of traditional karate training are fighting and self-defense, though its mental and moral aspects target the overall improvement of the individual. This is facilitated by the discipline and persistent effort required in training. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.
Silambam is a good form of cardio workout that improves blood circulation, and heart function. It relieves mental stress, laziness and fatigue.
Dance aids the development of kinesthetic intelligence and creates opportunities for self-expression and communication within the constraints of the medium of the body. Knowledge of dance helps students develop physical fitness, appreciation of the body, concern for sound health practices, and effective stress management approaches. Dance forms like classical and folk are taught.

Photography is the science, art, and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation. Photography for children can develop their learning across the curriculum and enable them to build an understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them. Learning photography boosts the self-esteem of children and develops their planning, and presentation skills. It also gives children the opportunity to communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings. ‘Still Photography’ and ‘Video photography’ are the two options offered.
